The future of the ColoWyo Mine and the community of Northwest Colorado are at risk. The mine, which helps provide electricity for a large part of the Western United States, is under attack by radical environmentalists. The activist group WildEarth Guardians sued the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) claiming that the agency did not adequately examine the environmental impacts of the mine. Based on this suit, a U.S. District Court judge ordered a review of the seven year old environmental assessment.
If the WildEarth Guardians’ lawsuit is successful and the mine is shut down, the community would face dire consequences. Over 200 jobs at the mine and $200 million in economic benefits could be lost. These impacts will ripple through the community, impacting local businesses and families.
