American Energy Alliance Unveils 2024 American Energy Scorecard

*This release contains an incomplete list of Senators who achived the rank of Energy Champion due to a tabulation error in both the calculations regarding H.J.Res.27, a joint resolution rejecting an expanded definition of “Waters of the United States” under federal law, and the six-year scores for the Senators’ full terms. This error resulted in inaccurate scores for the members of the U.S. Senate. We regret the error and have fixed the tabulation. A revised release can be found here. The updated Scorecard can be found on the AEA website.

WASHINGTON DC (9/4/24) – The American Energy Alliance (AEA) is pleased to release its newly redesigned 2024 American Energy Scorecard for the Senate and the House of Representatives. This comprehensive tool evaluates legislators’ voting records and cosponsorship decisions on critical energy issues in order to inform voters and hold Members of Congress accountable to their constituents.

AEA President Thomas Pyle issued the following statement:

“As we approach the upcoming election, voters deserve to know whether or not their elected officials support policies that promote domestic energy production and lead to affordable and reliable electricity and gasoline prices. The newly redesigned American Energy Scorecard empowers citizens to judge their elected representatives by their actions, not their words.

The American Energy Alliance applauds the American Energy Champions in both the House and Senate. These leaders are dedicated to advancing domestic energy production and ensuring affordable and reliable energy remains accessible to the American people and the rest of the world.”

Core Principles of the American Energy Scorecard:

  • Promoting affordable, abundant, and reliable energy.
  • Expanding economic opportunity and prosperity, particularly for working families and those on fixed incomes.
  • Empowering Americans to make their own energy choices, free from bureaucratic constraints.
  • Encouraging private sector innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Advancing market-oriented energy and environmental policies.
  • Reducing government interference in energy markets.
  • Eliminating subsidies, mandates, and special interest giveaways that drive up energy costs.

Each member was given advance notice of the votes that would be scored, ensuring transparency and fairness. The scored votes covered a diverse range of energy issues affecting the American people.

*Senate: (Please see revised release for the 2024 class of Senate Energy Champions)

This year’s scorecard assessed seven votes from the senators serving in the 118th Congress. Unfortunately, only two senators achieved a 90% score, the minimum score AEA’s scorecard uses to classify a senator as an Energy Champion. No senators achieved a score of 100%.

The American Energy Champions in the Senate are:

  • Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)
  • Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL)

While AEA applauds the two members who achieved 90%, we must also note those in key races whose voting record was especially harmful to their districts. Of the many low-scoring senators, Senators John Tester of Montana (33%) and Bob Casey (50%) of Pennsylvania were especially noticeable given the important role energy plays within their states’ economies.

Additionally, the following Senators scored 0%:

  • Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-CA)
  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)

House of Representatives:

For the House of Representatives, the 2024 AEA Scorecard encompasses 21 pivotal votes from the 118th Congress. Notably, 90 House members achieved a perfect score of 100%, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the energy principles outlined by AEA.
