Last month, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton released her “Plan for a Vibrant Rural America.” Despite Clinton’s claims, her plan will harm rural families. Moreover, by mandating expensive transportation fuels, Clinton’s plan amounts to a national gas tax. Clinton Flip-Flopped on Ethanol “Gas Tax” As a Senator, Clinton once adamantly opposed an early version of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which requires refiners to blend rising amounts of biofuel into gasoline....

Before the July 4th Congressional recess, the House began considering the FY 2016 Interior & Environment appropriations bill. A number of other amendments are awaiting consideration for debate when they return. One such well-intentioned amendment by Rep Loudermilk from Georgia stands out from the pack. His amendment reads:
“None of the funds made available by this Act may be used to implement, administer, or enforce section 211(o) of the Clean Air Act (42 U.S.C. 7545(o)).”
So what does...

This week, AEA President Tom Pyle penned an op-ed in Roll Call explaining why a corn-only repeal of the broken Renewable Fuel Standard may actually hurt American  families more than the status quo. Pyle lambasts lawmakers' attempts to re-work an unworkable law, and shows why full repeal is the only way to fix the RFS. Below is the text of the op-ed:
In an effort to show Congress “can work again,” some lawmakers are attempting to make an unworkable law even worse. Recently, several...

At a recent event in New Hampshire, New Jersey Governor and potential presidential candidate Chris Christie was asked by a member of the crowd his stance on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). In the past, Christie has come out in support of the mandate, telling Iowans that he “absolutely” supports the RFS because “it is what the law requires.” At the New Hampshire event, Rep. Joe Pitre (R-Strafford) asked “in light of the EPA’s recent proposal to roll back the amount of...

Actually, it was for Cellulosic Ethanol, but those Projections are Equally Unrealistic WASHINGTON -- American Energy Alliance President Thomas Pyle issued the following statement on EPA's proposed volume requirements for the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Renewable Fuel Standard: "Once again, EPA has deluded itself into thinking it can simply mandate the commercial cellulosic biofuel industry out of thin air. EPA's unrealistic projections for cellulosic biofuel underscore the incompetence of...

Why Congress Should Fully Repeal the RFS

Introduction The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is broken. The problems with the RFS are legion— it is based on incredibly mistaken assumptions about domestic oil production, it gives EPA control over the fuels we use, and increases the cost of fuel. Congress could soon consider two types of reforms to the RFS—either a full repeal of the entire program, or a partial repeal that only would affect corn-based ethanol.[1] A partial repeal of the RFS does not fix the biggest problems...

Below is an excerpt from the piece:

Last week, Robert Bryce, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, penned an op-ed discussing presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's convenient flip-flop on ethanol. Bryce points out that after voting against ethanol 17 times in the Senate, Hillary's presidential aspirations made her quickly change her tune in 2007. An excerpt from the piece follows:
As Clinton and her allies said back in 2002, the corn ethanol requirements are an anti-consumer government mandate. Between 2007 and...

Today, American Energy Alliance President Thomas Pyle penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on the Renewable Fuel Standard. In the piece, Pyle makes the case for repealing this broken and misguided policy. Below is the text from the op-ed:
At the Iowa Agriculture Summit earlier this month, most of the prospective Republican presidential candidates embraced the renewable-fuel standard, one of the worst examples of corporate welfare in America. This federal mandate props up the U.S....
